Heather’s Top Ten Pins (5-17-2013)

Top Ten Pins

I’ve been spending a lot of time on Pinterest lately (big shock there) and not a lot of time creating things myself. Don’t worry, I’m about to shift it into overdrive for Whitney’s baby shower – but until then, here are my “top ten pins” from this week! Enjoy! Don’t forget to follow me on Pinterest!

Humblebee and Me Sleepy Time Pillow SprayHumblebee and Me Sleepy Time Spray – I have been having a really rough time going to sleep lately. I guess that’s what happens when your mind goes and goes and goes constantly?! I’m seriously contemplating making some of this spray to see if it helps calm my brain!

I Shih Tzu Not t-shirtI Shih Tzu Not T-shirt – Okay, I couldn’t actually find where this t-shirt originated from, but can I just tell you that it caused me to bust out laughing in my office? (So what, I take 5 minute Pinterest breaks sometimes).

Chalkboard Fonts150 Chalkboard Fonts – Now you guys know that I love my fonts, so imagine my squeals of joy when I found this pin! Soon I will have them ALLLLLLL.

Orange-Julius-Popsicles

Orange Julius Popsicles – Whitney and I LOVE Orange Julius. Unfortunately, they don’t really exist anymore – so the closest I’ve been able to find is a dreamsicle snow cone OR a Sonic orange cream slush. The Sonic slush is probably the closest we’ve been able to get to the OJ flavor, but now I’m going to have to try these bad boys!

Embroidery Initial Necklaces

I just love these Embroidery Initial Necklaces – they are just so cheery and fun, how could you not like them? I have a “thing” for initials, so maybe it’s just me – but I love these!

0a96c7154f6b731ffb0cc19111bf6ab0

I mean, yeah, I made this – but it’s true. Maybe I’m way late on this, but have you seen this site? I am in love. I had a blast making different signs, and my favorite was this one!

BBQ Chicken Mini Pizzas 1

Kevin and I love BBQ Chicken Pizza – so why wouldn’t we love these too? I’ll be putting these on the grocery list as soon as I get back from…

Gateway Arch St. Louis, Missouri

St. Louis. Yep, I’m going back. This time for a full week! I’m still trying to decide what I want to do on my time off, so if you live in St. Louis help me out! A reader suggested the Botanical Gardens, so I hope to make it there this time! :)

Cherry Lemonade Slush

I am a sucker for cherry lemonade/limeade all year round. Imagine my smile when I cam across this recipe! We might be having these all summer long.

free-standing-vertical-pallet-herb-garden

Ah, Roeshel, one of my blogger idols. She’s got great taste (I mean, come on, she loves Gilded Pesto too)! Now I’m going to have to copy her… sometime… when I have somewhere to put this!

Well, those should hold you over for a few days. Heck, it’s the weekend – why don’t you make some of these?!

Fabric Flower Tutorial – Mother’s Day

Fabric Flower Tutorial - RCHOTXI know, I know – I promised a tutorial on the fabric flowers a couple of weeks ago! First of all, do you know how hard it is to take pictures of yourself making something? Well, most of you probably don’t (a few of you feel my pain, though) – it’s not easy! A flower that normally takes me around 20-30 minutes to make took, oh, 2.5 hours because of the pictures!

Here’s my tutorial, just in time for Mother’s Day (I used this tutorial that I found on Pinterest a loooooong time ago)! Moms love flowers.

Supplies needed:

Fabric (for this tutorial, I used 3 different fabrics – you can use however many you want)

Glue gun and hot glue

Felt

3 circle-shaped, different sized items - I used 2 ribbon bolts and the lid from a can of Pam – if you have a set of round cookie cutters, those work GREAT.

Button / rhinestone / bottle cap, whateversomething for the middle of the flower

Dress pin or hair clip, depending on what you want to use the flower on

1. Trace circles (on the wrong side of the fabric, so pen marks don’t show). You’re going to need 6 of each size.

3 circles for templates - RCHOTX

fabric cut for flowers - RCHOTX

2. Once those are cut, fire up the glue gun. You’re gonna need it! You’re going to make 18 separate “petals”, and I have found that it’s easier to make all the petals and THEN put the flower together – but you can do it however you want to!

Fold the fabric up like a taco - RCHOTX

fold to left, glue at point - RCHOTX

fold back and to the right - RCHOTX

first fold second fold - RCHOTXall circles are cut - RCHOTX3. Once you have all 18 petals made, use the smallest circle template and cut out a felt circle. It doesn’t have to match, because it’s just the base of the flower. It won’t show – mine just happened to match! Put a big blob of hot glue in the middle of the felt circle. I’m lazy, so that’s how I do it. People that care put hot glue on each little tip of the petals and arrange them perfectly. That’s not me. This is going to be the largest, bottom layer so use the biggest petals. Keep going until you make the full circle (6 petals).

first layer of petals - RCHOTX

1st layer complete - RCHOTX

4. Now that you have the bottom layer finished, you can do the other two layers. Just make sure that you stagger the petals, like the next picture!

2nd layer arrangement - RCHOTX2nd layer complete - RCHOTX3rd layer complete - RCHOTX5. Now you have to choose what you want to use for the center of the flower. For this flower, I covered a button. It’s easy, I promise. I was scared at first too, don’t worry. If you go the button-making route, pop those little hooks off the backs if yours aren’t flat. Once you have the button made, hot glue that sucker on! If you are using a rhinestone or something else (brads from the scrapbooking section of the craft store work too), just hot glue it on and be done with it. (I bought these button-making kits at the Upcycle Exchange – they aren’t that cheap anymore at the craft stores!)

button cover kit - RCHOTX

poppin hooks - RCHOTX

button in middle, almost finished - RCHOTX

6. Now that the flower is finished, you probably want to make it into a pin or hair clip. I chose to make this one into a pin (I am making these for baby shower hostesses to wear, along with the mom-to-be).

pin on back of flower - RCHOTX (1)

finished three layer flower - RCHOTXSee, that wasn’t that difficult, was it? Our friend Tarah is deathly afraid of anything that has to do with fabric, but I bet she could even make these.

If you don’t want a huge flower, you can always do one with just two layers. Or heck, even one. You can do a lot with this little flower!

Your mom would love one! (And hey, if you don’t want to make one, I’ve got a ton that I’ll sell ya!) (Seriously)

Enjoy! These are fun and addictive – to me, at least!

Have you heard about Spark Studio?

spark-studio-logo

Thanks to Walmart Labs for sponsoring today’s discussion!

Have you heard about Spark Studio? It’s a new way to shop walmart.com – if you like Pinterest, you will like this! It is actually a lot of fun – I’ve been messing with it for a couple of hours now :)

You can search for stuff by top pinned/color/brand/department. Now, I know this sounds like how you would search for things on the website anyway, but it’s different – I promise! Much like Pinterest, you are shopping by picture. Unlike Pinterest, however, you can actually shop from the site! Since I am shopping for multiple occasions (baby shower, a brand new nephew, Haven Conference clothes and travel necessities) Spark Studio makes it really simple.

With Spark Studio, you can browse and shop products by:

1) Inspirations- Items by Walmart shoppers on Pinterest
2) Fashion and Beauty- Discover must-haves from Walmart shoppers
3) For the home- Solutions and ideas from Walmart fans
4) Babies- Search the top picks from Pinterest moms
5) Pets- Find everything you will need for your pet
6) Playtime- A collection of items to entertain the whole family

Now that I’ve played around on Spark Studio, I decided to make my own Pinterest board for it so I can keep track of the stuff I need/like/love/want. Go see what I’ve pinned, and then make your own board – and then share it with me in the comments. I’m nosy like that.

Go! Have fun! Buy something for me! Mama needs a new rug for the living room :)

Who knew St. Louis was so cool?

I was asked to travel to St. Louis for work – it was very last minute, which made me twitch a little. If you know me at all, you know I love love LOVE to plan out my travels far in advance (uh, I’m already working on our Haven vacation in August – don’t look at me like that), and I had little to zero time to plan for this!

My aunt lived in the St. Louis area twice, but they were both a long time ago (mid-80′s and then again in early 90′s) so I was basically starting from scratch. I vaguely remembered her taking me to a cute little town that had a Main Street so I figured out what that was (St. Charles) and planned my one “free” day around that.

IMG_20130428_090016_086

I flew Southwest Airlines (my all-time favorite!) out of the newly remodeled Love Field Airport in Dallas. It was unrecognizable – in a good way! Nothing looked familiar at all, and I used to be very familiar with that airport (my husband and I dated long-distance for 4 years, so I was at Love Field a LOT), and was amazed at the transformation. I got in to St. Louis on a Sunday morning and hit the ground running. Well, driving. Who knew that Toyota Corollas got such great gas mileage? They do! I handled that airport like a pro (after dealing with D/FW Airport for my whole life, Lambert International was a piece of cake), turned on my Google Maps with my preloaded St. Louis map, and off I went.

(I’m not scared of driving in strange cities. Maybe I should be, but I’m not. My favorite thing to do is drive around and find new, cool stuff and neat neighborhoods, and this trip was no exception!)

I drove straight to St. Charles. I was in awe of that little city as soon as I drove into the Historic District. We just don’t have buildings that old in Texas! Main Street in St. Charles was like a postcard – cobblestone roads, little restaurants and boutiques, benches all along the street, and flowers everywhere. I loved it! The weather that day was perfect (well, perfect for ME, a hot-blooded Texas girl) – it was in the 50′s and drizzling. Everyone else had coats and scarves on, and there I was in my maxi skirt and lightweight shirt. It was the best outdoor shopping weather, in my opinion.

Red Posie - RCHOTX

My first stop was a store called Red Posie – I found it online and knew I would love it. They sell my beloved Maison Blanche paint (we got to talk about Annie & Nicole!) AND Miss Mustard Seed’s Milk Paint. The owners were there and I really enjoyed talking to them about painting furniture, blogging, and Haven Conference. We exchanged business cards and (of course) I bought some Milk Paint from them. They had a beautiful armoire that they were selling for $129 (!!!!) that I have not been able to stop thinking about. I had absolutely no way to get it home, though, so I have to let it go. I hope someone else buys it and loves it :) I do believe it was painted with Maison Blanche Collette, Tarah’s favorite. I will definitely be going to their store again if I ever get back to St. Louis (which I definitely hope happens!). Go like them on Facebook! They have lots of giveaways :)

After that, I headed towards Main Street!

St. Charles Main Street - RCHOTX

I had lunch at Bradden’s - grilled cheese and sweet potato fries, because I eat like a child. I can’t help it if I love grilled cheese! I didn’t want anything too heavy because I had a full day of shopping and exploring planned.

Side note: I used to hate doing anything alone, but I really enjoyed going on this trip by myself. It’s nice to not have to make conversation with someone all the time, and I liked being able to shop and wander at my own pace without feeling rushed or bored. Five years ago? That never would have happened. I don’t know that I could do a whole week alone in a new city, but a few days = perfect!

After lunch, I shopped. I went into many, many stores and took lots and lots of pictures. Laurie at Red Posie told me I should go to Menard’s. She told me it was like a combination of Home Depot/Lowe’s and a grocery store. Of course I had to go check that out – put it in my trusty Google Maps and off I went!

I did not know that it was the grand opening of the Menard’s I went to – people were directing traffic, it was a madhouse, etc. I debated on whether or not it was worth going in, but decided to just do it – not like I had anything better to do! It was definitely an experience – I didn’t spend too much time in there because 1) I had limited room in my suitcase, and 2) it was really, really crowded! My random purchases at Menard’s were: bottled water, 5 silver hooks for a project, and trash bags. Yes, trash bags. They were a great deal!

After Menard’s, I decided to go drop off my bags at the hotel. Got my room, turned the air down to a chilly 65 degrees (yes, I’m a polar bear), and left again!

I stayed in Creve Couer (which translates to “broken heart”, so that’s kind of depressing) and took backroads to downtown St. Louis. I think highways are boring and I only take them if I’m in a hurry/going to and from work. I take after my dad, what can I say? Anyway, taking backroads to downtown took quite a while, but I was in no hurry. I found some beautiful neighborhoods, saw a really pretty college campus, and then I finally made it to downtown St. Louis. (Central West End, Cherokee Antique Row, Lafayette Square)

I saw Busch stadium (well, tried to – there was a lot of construction around it!) and then headed to the Gateway Arch. I’ve been up in the arch before, so I didn’t really feel like I needed to do it again – but I wasn’t against it. I parked and walked through the pretty park leading up to the Arch, and by the time I made it to the entrance, they were closing. Whomp whomp. That’s what I get for mozying all day long. I took lots of pictures and walked back to my car to do some more exploring. I drove all around Forest Park (home of the 1904 World’s Fair!) – beautiful. I also found out that St. Louis has a ton of things to do for free – the zoo, most museums, etc. Awesome! I found the Anheuser-Busch Brewery (also closed, of course) and some other cool neighborhoods before deciding to grab dinner and head back to the hotel. I mean, I *did* have to work the next day. Ha!

I took more backroads back to Creve Couer, and decided to stop at Noodles & Co. to pick up dinner. Yes, it’s a chain, but it’s not a chain we have here in Texas! It was okay. I probably wouldn’t go back – nothing special but it was fine.

The next day, I found out about a place called Upcycle Exchange – of course, I didn’t find out about it in time to go that morning before work! I should’ve googled “cool St. Louis craft stores” the night before! I decided that I would go the next day after work, but before going back to the airport. Instead, I went to Chesterfield Mall because they had an Archiver’s scrapbooking store. The nearest Archiver’s to me in Texas is in, oh, Austin – so I just decided to make the 15 minute drive before heading to work. Of course I bought more stuff I didn’t need…

Work work work, blah blah blah…

Picked up California Pizza Kitchen before leaving the mall (YUM). The girl working there was asking me all about Texas because she was going to San Antonio in a few weeks. Ha! I also figured out that I DO have a Texas accent, and people DO notice it. Also? I say y’all a LOT. I can’t help it. I gave several St. Louis residents a chuckle when I greeted them with my drawl.

I worked the next morning and early afternoon and headed to Upcycle Exchange right after  I left the store – I didn’t have much time to hunt for stuff, but the basic premise of the Upcycle Exchange is you pay what you want for the things you buy. They do have “suggested” amounts, and apparently not many people take advantage of their “pay what you want” policy, so that was nice to hear. People donate craft supplies to the Upcycle Exchange (companies as well, supposedly) and can put that credit towards other merchandise if they want. It’s basically a craft supply co-op, and I really, really wish we had something like that in D/FW! I’m sure it is a lot of work, but how awesome is that? I picked up a few things (again, short on luggage space), gave $15 (a very fair amount for what I got) and headed out to the airport.

I really loved St. Louis – it was pretty, the people were friendly, and it was super easy to get around. I’ve already volunteered to go back and work again! I’m sure there is much more to be discovered – and I’ll be back to find it :)

It’s good to be home (I think)

Hey, remember me? I’m just now starting to catch my breath after being gone for (basically) two weeks straight!

I went to a meeting in Kerrville, TX for my company (I LOVE the Kerrville area) – then, the day after that I headed to our Pinterest Party, and THEN I was asked to go to St. Louis to help out in another store for a few days. As you can imagine, I’m exhausted, but I did manage to have some fun, shop, eat good food, and maybe do a little work too while I was gone.

Of course we had to stop and eat/shop/play on our way from Fort Worth to Kerrville, so (of course) I took some pictures! Looking at these, I guess I was having a “let’s check out light fixtures” kind of day…

We ate at Tea-Licious in Burnet, Texas for lunch. It was (obviously) a tea room, and there was a little gift shop there too. My favorite part about Tea-Licious? The pickles. I would have gladly eaten three jars of them.

Our next stop was Fredericksburg (yes, we skipped Pie Happy Hour at Bluebonnet Cafe in Marble Falls – I know, it’s a sin).

We picked up our friends at the Peach Tree Tea Room (great food, great cookbooks, cute little gift shop! I always try to eat there when I go to Fredericksburg), and did a little Main Street shopping.

My favorite store (also fairly new, or new to me!) was Red. It is kind of at the end of Main Street and is unlike any other store I’ve seen in Fredericksburg. Very modern, very trendy, not country at all :)

They had a ton of other cool things too, but the employees were very… vigilant, and I wasn’t sure about taking pictures (that also explains the blurriness of some of these). See what I do for you guys? One thing that I wish I had gotten a picture of was a tufted bench that had been reupholstered – but each button was a different color or pattern. I LOVED it.

If you ever make your way down to Fredericksburg, be sure and stop at Red. It’s a fun little store :)

Stay tuned for the St. Louis part of my trip!

Flowery Name Boards

Approaching the Scrap Pile - RCHOTX

Someone always comes up with a new craft at every Pinterest Party – and this time it was me! When Aunt Toni mentioned that she had a big scrap pile of wood and other assorted building products, I’m pretty sure my eyes lit up. (Aunt Toni is currently having a screened in porch converted into a room – she doesn’t normally have a trailer of building materials in her backyard!) Paige started it by going out to the pile and picking out a piece of 2×4. Once I saw that, I had to go do it on my own!

The Scrap Pile - RCHOTX

Wearing flip flops is not a good idea when dealing with scrap piles – you know, nails and fun stuff like that. Unfortunately, that’s all I had, so that’s what I went with! I am pleased to report that there were no injuries.

There wasn’t too much actual “wood” in the pile – it was mainly sheetrock, siding, busted up rocks, and MDF. I managed to find one decent piece of wood and several good pieces of MDF, so I grabbed them and headed back into the house.

I painted all of them with Annie Sloan Chalk Paint “Old White”. Why? Because it was already out, and I’m lazy. Plus, it goes with everything. Two coats on everything and that was that. I decided to make one for everybody but Paige, since she made her own and I pretty much copied her (but not really!). I know she is super sad that she didn’t get a Heather Original, but I will make her one if she really wants me to :)

Wood Scraps Painted ASCP Old White

I cut out everyone’s last names on the Silhouette (I really am going to have to upgrade to a Cameo soon!) and Mod Podged the names on the corresponding boards. Then we made flowers to put on them, and that was it! They turned out so cute and they were so easy – I’m sure I will be making more of them for friends and family – but hopefully it won’t involved climbing into a scrap pile next time! I’ll play it safe and go to the Orange store or the Blue store for my wood.

April Pinterest Party Food

We were fairly low-maintenance and low-energy for this last Pinterest Party (not that you would ever know that by looking at this picture!) so we didn’t want to mess with too much in the way of food. What we DID have was great, though!

Aunt Toni lived in Chile once upon a time because of my uncle’s job. While they lived there, they became close with other American families working for the same company, also living in Chile. Every year, they have a “Chile Reunion” and this year, Aunt Toni is hosting it, so she was trying out some new recipes on us.

She made Caprese Tarts. Holy crap. These were some of the best things I’ve ever tasted! I have been thinking about them ever since, and that’s just not healthy. We did decide that next time (yes, there WILL be a next time, hopefully sooner rather than later) we would make them as one big tart and slice it instead of making individual tarts.

Caprese Tarts - RCHOTX

The first night we were there, it was just the three of us (Heather, Whitney, and Aunt Toni – she is now “Aunt Toni” to everyone in the group – ha!) so we had Taco Salad. Always easy, always good.

The next morning, we had Peaches and Cream French Toast. *I* loved it, but everyone else wasn’t as in love with it as I was. I liked that it wasn’t sickeningly sweet, and I think all the other girls wanted it to be sweeter. I would definitely make it again!

Peaches & Cream French Toast - RCHOTX

Aunt Toni made some Phyllo Wrapped Asparagus as an “appetizer” for lunch – we failed to get a picture of them (probably because we inhaled them) but they were awesome! The sauce was okay, but in my opinion, unnecessary. The phyllo and asparagus gave plenty in the flavor department.

For lunch, I made an Italian Sub Bake. Now, I did make a few changes to the recipe – I used a 9×13 pan instead of a 9×9. I used the crescent roll “sheets” instead of just the rolls – one on top and one on bottom. It was good, easy, and filling – I would classify it as “dude food”. I would make it again, my husband would love it!

Italian Sub Bake - RCHOTX

For dinner on Saturday night, we had an assortment of goodies. Everyone (well, everyone except me, because they kept me busy on the Silhouette) pitched in and made something!  We had Garlic & Brown Sugar Chicken, quinoa (from Homegoods – it was excellent), roasted asparagus, Copycat Texas Roadhouse Butter on pumpernickel bread, and “Most Requested Salad”. Holy cats, that was a good meal. I could eat that salad every day – however, the dressing turned out to be somewhat of a FAIL so I would probably use a flavored vinaigrette instead.

Saturday Dinner - RCHOTX

In another attempt to use us as (very willing) guinea pigs, Aunt Toni made a Sour Cream Lemon Pie. Now, it TASTED great. Not too tart, not too sweet – just perfect. However, it did NOT set up correctly. It could very well be our fault, but it doesn’t matter – because we decided that it would be better served as a parfait in individual champagne or wine glasses. It was really great lemon pudding :)

Sour Cream Lemon -Pie- - RCHOTX

Sunday morning, we had yet another French Toast – this time, Cinnamon French Toast Bake (with pecans AND without, for those fools that don’t love pecans). It was good, but I prefer the peaches & cream version.

Cinnamon French Toast Bake - RCHOTX

We didn’t end up staying for lunch because everyone was tired and we were at a good stopping point. Apparently some people wanted to get home to see their husbands/fiances/kids/dogs? Whatever that is about.

Our next Pinterest Party is slated for sometime in August, and then we’ll do another one in November, and possibly an emergency Pinterest Party in early January, since our honorary housewife, Paige, is marrying MY COUSIN and she is all about the Pinterest wedding. We’re here to help, Paige, and welcome to the family (glad you didn’t run away screaming, that would have been really sad)!

If you have any crafts/recipes you think we HAVE to try out, give us a shout and let us know! We’re pretty open :)
